Expanding CDL Training Program at New Mexico Junior College

Permian Strategic Partnership Invests Over $1 Million to Expand CDL Training Program at New Mexico Junior College

Investment aims to boost road safety and meet the growing demand for commercial drivers in the Permian Basin

The Permian Strategic Partnership (PSP) is investing over $1 million to expand the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training program at New Mexico Junior College (NMJC), addressing a critical need for certified drivers and improved road safety in the Permian Basin. With the region projected to require 7,000 new CDL drivers by 2040 and facing high rates of commercial vehicle accidents, this investment will increase training capacity through new equipment, additional instructors, scholarships, and infrastructure. The expansion ensures more drivers can access high-quality training, helping to build a safer and more economically resilient region.

The PSP’s investment will fund two key phases of the program expansion:

  • Phase I: Construction of an additional testing pad, fund program recruitment efforts, and provide scholarships to increase accessibility.
  • Phase II: Hiring a new full-time trainer for three years and acquiring a new truck and trailer to increase training capacity.
